ARTIST STATEMENT

In my work, I convincingly represent forms, pair them with shadow, and give them the illusion of varying degrees of depth. The form is then juxtaposed with rhythmic brushwork, a reminder of the medium’s physical properties, as well as the flatness of the canvas. Pearly flesh, for example, fuses with cool emeralds peaking from beneath the closest surface. Planes begin and end, but the intervals can be messy, composed of color and texture that bleed and tear into the surface shapes. In contrast, clashing complementary colors call attention to severe lines created by planes meeting.

Opposing elements coexisting within the same picture plane—such as elements of naturalism and materiality—alert the viewer to symbols and signs. This permits a personal deconstruction of the paintings. Consequently, each painting has its own order and balance, and my task is to ensure that every square inch of the painting is consistent with this balance.
