PORTFOLIO: CITYSCAPES

Small, pastel and mixed media pieces on paper and larger works, oil on canvas, depict colorful, abstracted scenes of my Brooklyn neighborhood. Although certainly an expression of my love for those overlooked building facades of an earlier era, the work is an exploration of the integrated, interdependent nature of color, form, and line in art. The tangle of ivy, layers of peeling paint, and diverse materials (stone, wood, and metal), inspire me with their rich mix of texture, color, and interlocking planes. Complementary colors are played off of each other. Some forms are pronounced while others recede into an ambiguous background. It is possible to perceive the full orchestration of relationships that create the composition. To borrow a phrase from the painter Hans Hofmann, no form ever exists in isolation; it is defined by its neighbors. Imagine a dialogue between shifting planes, clashing complements, and pregnant negative spaces.
